Here it is…the end of February and it is time to get the Garden Plans together so when it is time to get outside I can get right to the maintenance needed to bring my gardens “alive” again. It starts here at my computer with a calendar, seeds and a nice cup of coffee!
I like to use the Farmer’s Almanac Garden Planner to plan my garden because it is so user friendly, saves so much time and I get great information about planning, caring, and maintaining my gardens. It also includes a Gardening Journal-which I do plan on using this year.
This is my 7th year gardening in Providence township and I can tell you it has been quite an adventure! Here is a little summary:
Year 1: I was so excited that I finally had a BIG yard (have to admit 19.5 acres is a big yard) to have a garden in after many years of moving around and having to start from scratch with small gardens. My son-in-law (mostly him) and I tilled a big section in a nice sunny spot and we planted the seeds! This was the outcome:
Needless to say it was not a productive year…We had no idea it flooded in the Spring!
Year 2: Now that I realized we had flood areas, I decided to put in raised garden beds by using cinderblocks:
Year 3: Expanded to the length of the “cinderblock garden”
Year 4: I added an arch and a fence to the garden:
Year 5: This was the year I got re-married, so there wasn’t a lot of gardening pictures and I did not try any thing new! We do get beautiful spring flowers:
Year 6: This is the year we are all told to stay home, so I decided I needed to expand my vegetable garden into the farm field! I worked in the hot sun to turn the soil and pull the roots of old growth and had planned everything out. Shortly after I planted the seeds, torrential downpours once again wreaked havoc on my garden and it never recuperated! I planted in my arch garden and had great herbs and excellent peppers that I planted in an old sandbox!
Year 7: Brings me back to today and the planning process! This is a start to my gardening plans: Arch Garden will hold lettuces and herbs, and everything else will go in 10 and 25 gallon garden planters.
